URGE CHOCOLATES, THE ARTISAN SMALL BATCH CHOCOLATE COMPANY

Urge Chocolates started in 2010 as a home based business, growing from just a hobby in 2008 to present, where we've become one of Vancouver's go to boutique chocolate manufacturing company for unique and creative chocolates and confections.

Our approach and inspiration...

Start with an idea, ingredients that make you think and get inspired. Add creativity, spirit, things you love, a dash of humility and humour, and plenty of room for surprise. Test. Share. Refine. Repeat. Simple yet effective. Our recipe to making divine chocolates, and to life.

The Chocolatier

From the age of three he’s been selling caramels, chocolates and candy, not his own mind you but those of his grandfather. Someone who enjoyed his sweets. During visits with his grandparents, he would often sneek caramels and candies from the coffee table bowl, some would be eaten but the rest hidden only to resurface as sellable goods to guests. Who could resist buying delicious treats from a three year old?

That’s where it started. His grandfather was always one to have a candy of some sort in his pocket, he enjoyed the gift of giving a little sweetness to help brighten someone’s day, often getting a smile in return. He thrived on it and Dirke isn’t that different. He loves seeing people enjoy his handmade chocolates and confections.

Of course he hasn’t always been a chocolatier, he’s often asked what he used to do, waiting for the story of transformation. It was a big transition, he admits. Starting as a commercial journeyman printing press operator migrating to a software technical support specialist and then into chocolate. A die-hard foodie, baker and lover of wine, he always enjoyed being in the kitchen creating. "It's relaxing and therapeutic" he says, with chocolate you can't rush it or you'll ruin it. You learn patience very quickly.

During a tasting at one of his favorite wineries he was presented a pairing of ice wine within a chocolate cup, it was a perfect pairing. In an attempt to recreate the experience he tried to find the chocolate cups to no avail. So it just made sense to him to try and make them and this is where he started to dabble in chocolate.

“The greatest thing about working with chocolate is even if you make a mistake, you can melt it and try again” he says. “Then you either learn from it or you’ve created something exciting and new.”

An honest, curious approach to the craft of chocolate applies to business for Dirke as well. Urge has built a reputation for personal service and highest quality--and it’s one that Dirke is determined to continue building. “I love what I do,” he says of his role as owner and head chocolatier of Urge Chocolates, “I’m lucky enough to be able to continually discover and develop new flavour combinations that blow your mind, and to share them with family and friends. Making chocolate is an incredible way to be able to do that.”
